Bunny & The Lakers: Numbers (Zaius Tapes)
Originally (self??) released on Belsize/Caplan/Wymark (Toronto, Canada) in 1979!
Along with the Negative Reaction (1981) reissue, this is one of our favorite from Zaius Tapes, an imprint that appears to be broadening their hyper-focused 1980-82 archival window. This is the closest Zaius has come to effete synth theatrics.
Invoking cosmopolitan contemporaneous releases on Lovely Music and what we imagine percolating at The Kitchen in those days, on the one hand, and scrappy synth UK-inspired NYC bands like 3 Teens Kill 4 (see the archival issue on Dark Entries) this all feels very early ‘80s NYC!! And no offense to core member G. B. Jones (artist, filmmaker, zine publisher, eventually in Toronto’s Fifth Column) and songwriter Peter Morgan (no documentation of his work after this amazing lp), this is an amazing song-based art record.
Highly recommended, folks!
