McCowen’s composition involves spectral analysis of contrabass clarinet multiphonics; the tuning corresponds with the overtone spectrum of McCowen’s instrument. These hyper-spare b/w hyper-restrained resonant and rich slow long-form techniques make Stars of the Lid sound like New Order.
Mixed and mastered by Albert Finnbogasson in Reykjavík, this LP captures the multi-layered tonal and sonic qualities of three voices, and a variety of phantom sounds. John’s work avoids amplifier feedback or electronically-generated sounds, so have at this release folks, just not on your phones and/or laptops.
