Rump State, Mark Morgan’s very active duo with Norwegian Gaute Granli, just returned from its 2026 EU tour and carried back copies of their debut LP, Retaliation Aesthetics, issued on the French no lagos musique imprint in 2023.
Retaliation Aesthetics sounds spare compared to the duo’s recent album on 12XU, so lots of space for voice to bend into the frame and out, damaged guitar to add texture, and even some identifiable/representational sounds that could be standard instrumentation (piano?) that probably has been generated through boards, pedals, and twists of the knob.
What do we call Rump State fans? Most self-identify as “Rumpers.”
And what about the fantastic play on #relationalaesthetics in this title’s debut? Can’t think of a better nemesis than this project.
