Venetian Snares: Rossz Csillag Alatt Született (Planet Mu)
Though the 2002-2004 window proved his most productive in terms of arriving on the international stage, the high-water mark from Winnipeg’s Venetian Snares finally and fully arrived in 2005. Twenty years ago (!!) Aaron Funk released the amazing Winnipeg is a Frozen Shithole (Sublight Records) and this total game-changer, Rossz Csillag Alatt Született (Planet Mu).
Purportedly inspired by leaving Winnipeg (frozen shithole or naught) for an extended visit to Hungary, this has to be one of the masterpieces of “breakcore,” “drillnbass” whatever one wants to call it in the here and now.
This 2Lp mixes classical music, strings and brass with Aaron Funk’s sharp edit cut-up dance stylings. One of our favorite records from this period: Bartok, Stravinsky, Mahler, Billie Holiday and even a Hungarian suicide song (purportedly) all embed within Funk’s rhythms and atmosphere; think less period piece, samples, drum machines, and more cinematic essay film sound collage brought together in one singular voice.
Cover art’s origin story: Funk imagining himself as a pigeon flying around Budapest.
File Under: Drugs n’ Bass
